Christophe Laporte won the opening stage of Paris-Nice and is the first leader of the 8-day stage race. Teammates Primoz Roglic and Wout van Aert take two en three respectively, making it an entire podium for Jumbo-Visma.
It was a dominant performance of the Jumbo-Visma trio, attacking on the final climb of the day and timetrialling to the finish line in Mantes-la-Ville. For Laporte it’s his first victory for his new team. He also takes the first yellow jersey as the overall leader and green jersey as best sprinter of the 8-day stage race.
"I am thrilled. As a French rider, Paris-Nice is a big race for me. The plan was to keep Primoz in the classification and sprint with Wout. I was allowed to attack to make the race hard, which I did, and only the three of us remained."
Wout van Aert:
"We had the plan to make it a hard race on the climb. It would be a smart move to increase my chances on winning today’s stage and to keep Primoz in contention for the overall classification. Christophe took over from Nathan (Van Hooydonck) so fiercely that we put everyone on his limit. I was surprised that we could create a gap with only the three of us. It was a matter of racing to the finish as fast as possible. I think this is an extraordinary victory for Christophe in his own country. Also because of the yellow jersey that comes with it. I wanted to give him this victory.”
