At the 2019 European Championships in Silvelle, Laurens Sweeckrepeated his performance of last year as he took 3rd place for the second year in a row.
A strong chase and acceleration in the final saw Sweeck making his way to the podium. The Belgian rider pushed on and created a gap big enough to secure his second bronze medal at the European Championships.
Mathieu Van der Poel claimed his third consecutive European Title in the Venetian town, ahead of Belgian Eli Iserbyt. Sweeck rounded out the podium, 20 seconds down on Van der Poel. Toon Aerts finished 7th.
Laurens Sweeck commented on his performance:
"At the start, I deliberately didn't want to take the lead. I felt good during the race, and felt as though I had the legs to win it. Unfortunately I made too many mistakes during the final two laps, including falling in the canal three times. I was trying too hard. It's easy to make mistakes, and to quickly lose more time."
"At one point, I was able to sit on Van der Poel's wheel for a moment, but it was obvious that he still had another gear. However, I felt as though I was keeping pace well enough to try for the win. Everyone was on the limit, but the best man won."
