Wout van Aert has won the Superprestige Heusden-Zolder after a thrilling two-men battle and head-to-head sprint with Mathieu Van der Poel.

On the sports tarmac of the Zolder raceway, Van Aert won the fifth round of the Telenet Superprestige Series and his third win of the season.

From the very start, Van Aert and Van der Poel took off and dominated the entire race. Yet, it was Van Aert who beat out long-time rival Van der Poel in a back-and-forth race, with the Belgian winning the head-to-head sprint.

Wout van Aert:

“The entire race was nerve-wracking. Mathieu immediately took off from the beginning and we knew it would be hard to get rid of one another. In the second half of the race, I was only thinking about my tactics in the next part. I wanted to make it a long sprint. So I thought it was better to be in second position.”

“In the final it was full gas, but I was in the position I hoped for … until Mathieu made a mistake and still got stuck in first position. From that moment I tried to catch my breath en made it a long sprint. I’m happy to have kept my cool and proud with this victory.”
