Wout van Aert finished 3rd in the first Monument of the season. He survived the longest race of the pro racing calender without any problems and came close to his second victory in a row of ‘La Primavera’. Finishing just behind Stuyven and Ewan, Van Aert was able to claim another classics' podium.
Wout van Aert:
“I had the legs to win, but was caught. Milan-San Remo is a very difficult race to win, I gambled and lost in the final. I also didn’t want to throw away my sprint chances by chasing Jasper with the rest in my wake. A lot of riders were looking at me, which I expected, being last year's winner. On the Poggio I tried, but we were still with too many guys. I expected a bigger shake-up, but apparently the conditions were not tough enough. I’m disappointed that I didn’t win, but I don’t know if I could have done something different. Overall, I can’t be unhappy with this third place. My form is fine and I’m looking forward to the Flemish classics with confidence.”
