Wout van Aert put in a huge performance at the World Championships Individual Time Trial. The Belgian only had to concede 5 seconds to Filippo Ganna after a nail-biting race against the clock in Flanders.

Van Aert had set the fastest time at both intermediate time checks along the 43.3 kms course from Knokke-Heist to Bruges. Yet, it was defending World Champion Filippo Ganna who timed the last part perfectly. Van Aert became Vice World Champion for the second time in a row.

Wout van Aert:

“I feel a bit disappointed, not really about my performance because I’m actually quite happy with how everything went, I made no mistakes, my time trial was steady I think, I was just beaten by a stronger rider, a specialist in this discipline. Seeing how close I end up behind him I should really just be happy. It’s a top result, but I was very close to that rainbow jersey. That makes it a little bit disappointing.”

“This week I’m going to prepare myself well for the road race next Sunday. I feel confident about it. Today the crowd was really fantastic. It was great to see people standing along the side of the road. I think we will see the same scenes next week. I’m really looking forward to that.”
