Van Aert took a solo victory in Herentals, winning the 5th round of the X2O Badkamers Trofee in his Home town. Toon Aerts finished third and consolidated his overall series lead with only 3 rounds left to race.

It’s Van Aert’s 8th victory of the season, finishing more than one minute ahead of second-placed Tom Pidcock. He immediately went solo in the second of nine laps, leaving Pidcock and Aerts behind, and build up his lead in the upcoming laps. Pidcock crossed the line 1’06” behind Van Aert, while Toon Aerts sprinted home to finish a second behind the Brit and was able to consolidate his series lead.

Wout van Aert:

“The tactic for today was pretty clear. In the first lap, the competition fought for the bonification seconds of the overall classification. Then, I decided to increase the pace. I structured my race so that I could go full speed on the ski hill. I’m glad that tactic worked out well. I made a few mistakes along the way, so there is still room for improvement. At those moments in the race, I blame myself. But, it’s nice that I can finally celebrate the win in front of my family in my hometown.”
