Wout van Aert conquers 4th national cyclo-cross title, Toon Aerts seals silver On the muddy course in Meulebeke, Wout van Aert claimed the Belgian tricolore with a dominant performance. He finished 20 seconds ahead of Toon Aerts after a solo ride for almost six of nine laps. For the three-time world champion, it’s his fourth Belgian cyclo-cross title as he already won the national championships in 2016, 2017 and 2018.
It was defending champion Laurens Sweeck who took a blistering start with van Aert on his wheel, but van Aert pushed the pace in the 3rd round and created a gap that he would hold until the finish.
Behind there was a battle for the podium between Aerts, Vanthourenhout and Sweeck. In the closing laps, Aerts proved to be the strongest and finished 20 seconds ahead of Vanthourenhout to claim silver. For Aerts, it’s his third podium in three consecutive years.
Wout van Aert dedicated his victory to his newly-born son, Georges, and his wife Sarah:
"I didn't want to say it before the race, but I slept in the camper for six nights. That is not very comfortable at all. I would like to dedicate my victory to my son Georges and especially my wife Sarah. Nine months taken care of and this week … Thank you Sarah.”
"I felt good in the beginning and was able to expand the gap in a good way. From the middle of the race, I was à bloc. After that, it came down to keep the lead, which was difficult enough. I had far from the energy I wanted, but I am satisfied with this title."
