Wout van Aert won the opening stage of Tirreno-Adriatico and takes the first leader's jersey in Camaiore. He dominated the bunch sprint by out gunning some of the world’s best sprinters as Caleb Ewan (Lotto Soudal) finished second and Fernando Gaviria (UAE Team Emirates) third. This victory marks Wout’s first pro road cycling win of 2021, after he already finished 4th on Saturday at the Strade Bianche.

Wout van Aert:

“Of course we were aiming for the win. I just didn’t expect to win immediately consedering the strong sprinters present. I was positioned perfectly by the team. I didn't want to wait too long before launching my sprint, because it was a high speed sprint. Fortunately, I was able to keep my speed until the finish line. I am very happy that my sprinters legs are back. The bonification seconds are a nice bonus. It gives me a few extra seconds ahead of a lot of other (GC-)riders. I want to achieve the highest possible result in the general classification.”

“Both in Strade Bianche and today we rode as a strong team. The guys dropped me off well in the sprint. It makes me proud that I was able to finish off the team’s work. It's a good way to start the stage race and it's an advantage for the rest of the week. We are riding with high morale and have a lot of confidence for what will follow in the coming days.”
